Paula L. Hernandez-Verme was born in Lima, Perú on August, 1970, the daughter of Angel E. Hernandez and Maria L. Verme, and the sister of Manuel Hernandez-Verme. After completing her basic education at San Antonio de Padua School, Lima, Perú, in 1987, she studied Economics at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. She obtained the degree of Bachelor in Social Sciences with a major in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in December of 1993, and the degree of Licentiate in Economics also from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in December of 1994, specializing in the fields of Open Economy Macroeconomics and Econometrics.
With respect to her professional work in the academic sector, between January 1991 and 1993 she worked as a Teaching Assistant of Economics in The Law School and the College of Social Sciences of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. Between January of 1994 and August 1996, Paula Hernandez-Verme worked as Associated Faculty of Economics in the same university.
Paula Hernandez-Verme also worked for the private sector in Perú. She started working for Cuánto S.A. as Chief of Economic Analysis, Coordinator of the Consumer Price Index of Cuánto and Coordinator of the statistical publication “Perú in Numbers,” between January 1992 and July 1993. Later, Paula started to work in one of the most important private consulting firms in Perú, Apoyo Consultoría S.A. There, she started as Analyst in charge of Macroeconomic Analysis and Quantitative Methods and Coordinator of Consumer Price Index of Apoyo, between January 1994 and March 1996. Later, she continued to be in charge of the Consumer Price Index of Apoyo and was promoted to Senior Analyst in charge of Macroeconomic Analysis and Quantitative Methods.
She started her studies in the Ph. D. program in the Department of Economics at The University of Texas at Austin in August 1997, where she obtained the degrees of Master of Arts in June 1999 and Ph. D in Economics in August 2002. While at this school, she received awards and fellowships such as: The University Continuing Fellowship by the Graduate School, the Murray S. Johnson Fellowship by the Department of Economics, the Hale Fellowship, also by the Department of Economics, and Summer Tuition Fellowships by the Graduate School. She had the great pleasure of working under the guidance of Bruce D. Smith and Scott Freeman.
She started working for the Department of Economics at Texas A&M University in the Fall 2002 as an Assistant Professor. There, she has been the Instructor of the following formal courses: Intermediate Macroeconomics, Graduate Macroeconomic Theory II, Graduate Balance of Payments, and Principles of Macroeconomics-Honors.
Dr. Hernandez-Verme does research in the fields of: Macroeconomic and Monetary theory, Open Economy Macroeconomics, Payments Systems, Monetary History, Econometrics and Quantitative methods.
