2001

Cook, Joe: has gone back to NERA from the position of Principal and Managing Director of LECG, LLC. The new address is posted in the directory.

Crain, Mark: had a paper entitled "Legislative Organization and Government Spending: Cross-Country Evidence," published in the Journal of Public Economics, Vol. 82 (3), December 2001, pp. 309-325.

Crane, Peggy: Texas A&M has been on my mind lately because I have been working on several different accuracy checking projects for the principles texts and two different texts have made reference to Dr Battalio's former rat/pigeon lab. Roger Miller's text mentions it in the first chapter in a discussion of rational behavior and Roger Arnold's text talks about it in the consumer choice theory chapter. I am actually using Arnold's text this semester so I told my students, "I knew those rats!"

Edwards, Mary E.: I have just a bit of news to pass along. Besides two publications in 2000, I have been elected president of the Minnesota Economics Association and Director of the MS Program in Applied Economics at St. Cloud State University. Our department has also started a newsletter for our alumni. What a great way to keep in touch!

Fry, Clifford L.: is Executive Vice President of RRC, Inc., an economics consulting firm located in Bryan/College Station. Clifford works with another graduate of the Dept. Of Economics, Donald House, PhD, who is President of RRC, Inc. Both are working on projects for the American Dental Association, ALCOA, Procter and Gamble, Ford, Volvo, and other firms. Clifford wants everyone to know that "...the "real world" is out here, and it is not all that bad."

Genc, Ismail H.: I was visiting our web site at TAMU Alumni. I realized I have not submitted any news about myself. Here is one piece:

I have been recognized by the Alumni Association of the University of Idaho, among other faculty, as the Most Influential Faculty in the Life of one of my students. The student herself is recognized for her both academic and social succcess as an examplary citizen on campus. The banquet was held on 12/06/01.

Gottret, Pablo: For the past three years I hold the position of President of the Supervisory Body for Securities, Pensions and Insurance (it is like chairman of the Securities Exchange Commision, except that we also supervise social security, which is private in Bolivia, and insurance companies). This is a non-political position. According to our regulation the position is named by the President from a list of three candidates approved by at least two thirds vote by the Senate. The position has a fixed six year term.

Before this position I was doing consulting work out of my own company. Although it was very hard work it allowed me to travel to many different and interesting places.

Overall, things have gone very well.

As you may know our current President in Bolivia is an Aggie (Jorge Quiroga, class of ?2). There is a small chance we may go together to College Station this coming October (Oct. 27). If his schedule does not allow it, it is certain we will be in Aggieland on March 2002.

As a good head of a latin family, I have four children (Pablo 9, Nicole 8, Mauricio 2 and Natalie 10 months). All of them will have to attend Texas A&M (I already told my eldest that they may choose any college but I am only paying A&M).

Li, Dong: has moved from East Carolina University to Kansas State University in December, 2001.

Li, Qi: has beomce an associate editor for Journal of Econometrics in December, 2001.

Mathur, Sondip K.: I will like to take this opportunity to provide you with new details of my whereabouts. I left the University of Iowa in July 2001. On August 1 I joined the University of Texas School of Public Health, UT Health Science Center at Houston (in the Texas Medical Center). I am with the SPH Management and Policy Sciences Faculty. Also, I have a joint appointment with the University Administration as the University Economist.

Rupp, Nick: has moved from Valdosta State University to East Carolina University.

Smith, Dean Howard: Some news? It is official. Following negotiations between my two colleges, Business administration and ecosystem science and management, we have extended by temporary dual position to a formal one. Associate Professor of Economics and Applied Indigenous Studies at NAU. I am also conducting numerous consulting projects under the umbrella of Sustainable Energy Solutions at NAU. These combine my work on energy policy and Native American econ development.
