2000

Ahn, Seong-Eun: I became the Chairman of Economics Department at Kyungil University, beginning September 1, 2000. I had a great time with Dr. Jansen when he visited Korea.

Berg, M. Douglas:  I have two girls ages 5 and 2. We live in Kingwood, TX because my wife is working for Exxon-Mobil. I drive to Huntsville (61 miles oneway) every day. My current rank is assistant professor. I will have my tenure vote next year. My most recent research was a report done for the NAACP in Austin, TX. It dealt with racial profiling. My work was done with a colleague (Dwight Steward) who teaches at UT.

Boner (Hearne), Linda: You always seem to request updates just when I have new information! I am still at LECG but recently gave birth to daughter #2, Victoria Edna on 8/31. She is doing great, as am I. Daughter #1, Ekaterina appears to have adjusted well and loves being a big sister as it apparently affords her higher status in her preschool class. I do not expect to be attending the meetings in New Orleans, so I will miss seeing you and the others there. Recently met Joe Cook, who Craig Schulman insists overlapped with me. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time Craig recollected incorrectly! Joe recently joined the LECG DC office also. Best regards to all there who remember me!

Crain, Mark: My paper, "The Constitutionality of Race-Conscious Redistricting: An Empirical Analysis," will be published in the January 2001 issue of the Journal of Legal Studies.

Cochran, Bruce: I'm currently on leave from San Jose State working in the Treasury department of Cisco Systems in San Jose.

Delemeester, Greg: I have been named a McCoy Professor at Marietta College for the period 2000-2004. McCoy Professors are recognized as outstanding teachers by a selection committee composed of nationally recognized teachers and scholars who are not members of the Marietta College community. The four-year designation carries an annual salary supplement.

Edwards, Mary E.: I received a Teacher Recognition Award from the St. Cloud State Student Representative Assembly, and I had two articles published this year, Organizational Form and Nursing Home Behavior with William Luksetich and Thomas Carroll came out in the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, June 2000; and Leviathans vs. Lilliputians, with Patricia Nold Hughes will be published in the December issue of Journal of Regional Science.

We have a position open for Director of Economic Education. The successful candidate would have about 5/8 release time for directing the center and 3/8 time teaching. Preferred fields are law and economics, economics of nonprofit organizations, and applied microeconomics. Interested candidates may check the INOMICS web site or the October or December JOE.

Ellis, Michael:  Hope all is well with you. There are only a couple of items about me for the newsletter: (a) I was promoted to Associate Professor last year. (b) I am currently visiting Volgograd State University in Russia for the semester.

George, Susan M. : This update is almost not worth writing about, but I moved departments at the IMF. I moved from the Institute to European II in July. I am now working on Lithuania, which is a program country. I am enjoying the work quite a bit. Of course I am traveling more, but I like the change.

Giles (Madsen), Kirsten: I am working as an research analyst for Colorado State University in Ft. Collins Colorado where I analyze admissions and enrollment policies. My address is 3543 Silverleaf Ct., Ft. Collins, Co, 80526. My email address is kgiles@ir.colostate.edu. I am married to Rick Giles, who works with GE Global Controls, and am the mother of two extremely bright and exceptional children, Katy (7) and Cody (6).

Hassan, Seid: I have been promoted to an associate professor level beginning this year (2000).

Hite, Arnold: In a moment of madness, I applied for the dean's job here at Charleston Southern University. Now that I am the Dean of the School of Business, I have about twice as many meetings as before and even less class room time. At least I get to set the dress code, and only wear a tie a few days per week.   My son J. is a freshman at Clemson. He emails me his calculus homework.

Holcomb, Jim: I am now an Assistant Vice President of Research and Sponsored Projects. Still at University of Texas at El Paso.

House, Donald R.: Oldest son, Donald, Jr. is enrolled in the Ph.D. economics at Texas A&M. I am still President of RRC, Inc. We are still based in Bryan, Texas. We've been in business since 1977.

Karafiath, Imre: After six years, I stepped aside as department chair and returned to full-time teaching and research.

Kim, Sun G.: From November 30 thru December 9, I am making a trip to Egypt for a field survey as an initial step of executing a research project, entitled "Master Plan of Egyptian Center for Industrial Technology & Science Park." The project has been sponsored by Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

Lee, T. W.:  It's good to hear from Aggieland. I remember that last year Econ Department launched a Charles Maurice Fellowship program, how is it doing? What should I do if I want to make contribution to that fellowship?

The labor market for skilled labor is still very tight, that's why many companies have "referral bonus program". In my case, Citibank offers $4,000.00 for referral of new employee of certain rank and above. For those Aggies in Econ who are on the job market, I will be glad to submit their resumes and pass the "referral bonus" (whatever amount that is) to the Maurice Fellowship. Since there should be many Econ alumni in the industry, maybe this is another way Alumni can help in contributing the bonus as well as helping fellow Aggies land a decent job, what do you think?

Locke, Peter: I am now at George Washington University full time. I am attaching my new and improved vita, to replace the old worn out one.

Lukens, Jay: I am the President of Lukens Energy Group, a 20 person consulting firm with offices in Houston and Calgary. I am still married to Susan and we have three children. Our oldest is a junior at University of Southern California (majoring in Music Industry) and our daughter is a freshman at Vassar (majoring in Marxist feminism, or so it seems so far). Our youngest son is in 8th grade. I would love to hear from anyone who was around during 1978--1981.

Marks, Melanie:  I am now the Director for the Center for Economic Education at Longwood College, which is extremely well funded. We serve over 20 counties in VA and train teachers in economic education so that they can meet the VA Standards of Learning implemented by the Department of Ed a few years ago. My husband (Kevin Sheehan) and I also have a new baby boy, Chaney Lee Sheehan. He was born 8-7. This gives us 2 boys (and now we are done!).

Matthews, Warren T: Last September I accepted this position as dean of liberal arts at Kingwood College near Houston. Previously I was professor of economics at Houston Baptist Univ and Texas A&M Kingsville. Before that economist at Center for Naval Analyses, CIA and Mortgage Bankers Association.

Moody, Richard: My "news" is that I have been promoted to Vice President and Senior Economist at the PNC Financial Services Group. My really good news is that Dawn and I are the proud "parents" of a golden retriever puppy named Molly.

Mora, Marie T: I want to let you know that I received an early promotion to the Associate Professor level effective August 2000. Also, I received the 1999-2000 Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Research for Junior Faculty from the College of Business Administration and Economics, New Mexico State University in May 2000.

Nieswiadomy, Michael: I am the president of the Dallas Economists Club for 2000. I published the following article this year: "African Elephants: The Effect of Property Rights and Political Stability," with Michael McPherson, Contemporary Economic Policy, January 2000,Vol. 18, No. 1, pp. 14-26.

My oldest son, Ben, (born two weeks before I left College Station) will be attending TAMU as anengineering freshman student in Fall of 2001. My how time does fly?

Peters, Geni: Not much has changed for me this year. I'm still lecturing at UCSD (I'm teaching all of their intermediate macroeconomics courses this year - ironic given the limited time I spent studying macro as a student). I'm still waiting for Serge (my significant other) to finish his dissertation so that we can look for more permanent positions together. He promises he'll be done by the end of the summer, so it's likely that I'll be back
here again next year as well.

I'm also spending some of my limited time and money on investments in San Diego real estate. I just became a partner in a small (4-unit) apartment building in the area. We already have a buyer, and will hopefully complete the deal by the beginning of December. Then we start looking for a new property to flip. In the current real estate market, it's looking very profitable.

That's about it from here. Please pass along my best wishes to the rest of the faculty and students.

Pinnoi, Nat:  I am currently on a one year sabbatical leave to work at the World Bank Office in Bangkok as a Project Economist. Next September, I will go back to resume my position as an Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Business, Asian University of Science and Technology. The World Bank address is The World Bank, 14th Floor, Diethelm Tower A, 93/1 Wireless Rd., Bangkok 10330, Thailand; Phone (662) 256-7792 ext. 362; Fax (662) 256-7794.

Rodarte, Mario: I was promoted to be the Director of the Center for Economic Studies of The Private Sector.

Roeske, Shawn: I have started working at Deloitte Consulting. My address is 9955 Kempwood, #632, Houston, Texas 77080.

Schansberg, D. Eric: We have a new baby, Brennan Elisha, born on June 23rd. I am promoted to full professor last Spring and won the School of Business Research Award for 1999-2000.

Schulman, Craig: Nothing of real interest to report about me, but, after skipping 2nd grade Joshua made the honor roll this fall in 3rd. Obviously, he gets his intelligence from his mother!

Shwiff, Steve: I have been promoted to full professor. Other than that a pretty boring life.

Slottje, Dan: I am KPMG's chief economist and the Partner in charge of their FLS (forensic and litigation support) practice for the SW U.S. I am still at SMU too.

Smith, Dean Howard: I'm not sure when the last update was, so here goes.

Modern Tribal Development: Paths to Self-Sufficiency and Cultural Integrity in Indian Country, Altamira Press, June 2000. This is an interesting book that discusses the development process in the context of Indian Reservations.

Hosted "Modern Native America: Building Successful Communities" conference at NAU, August 2000. Second annual conference will be held August 2001. I am currently editing the book of discussions from the conference.

I am now Associate Professor of Economics and Applied Indigenous Studies. My position is split between two colleges. Our new department, in the College of Ecosystem Science and Management, began operation and classes in August 2000. We are currently recruiting and expanding the students base and faculty. I chaired the implementation team officially known as the AIS Steering Committee. In January 2000, the Arizona Board of Regents approved our request to offer degrees and by August we were up and running!

I continue to work with the Western States Petroleum Association on various pricing and legislative issues.

NAU is actively exploring alternative fuel electrical generation on a variety of levels all aimed at economically feasible entrpreneurial and corporate enterprises. This is a joint project between myself and faculty from Engineering and Forestry and the energy companies.

Smith, Dean G.: Earlier this year I was promoted to full professor. I'm the director of the executive master's degree programs and the director of post-graduate pharmacoeconomics fellowship programs with Pfizer and OrthoBiotech. I you have any masters or doctoral graduates interested in research within the pharmaceutical industry, let me know.

I also sold the HMO that I had started a couple of years ago (American Family Care), though I remain on the board of directors, and had my 60th publication (Cost Management Activities of PPOs, Journal of Risk and Insurance).

Vanderhart, Michel: I am now a Manager at Arthur Andersen Boston/Chicago, and published a paper, "On the Determination of Wages: Does Marriage Matter?," with Jeffrey S. Gray in "The Ties that Bind: Perspectives on Marriage and Cohabitation," edited by Linda J. Waite, Aldine de Gruyter, New York, 2000.

Vanderhart (Hall), Jennifer: Michel and I are doing well here in Boston. I'm afraid, however, that we are not terribly newsworthy this time around. No promotions, awards, honors, or kids (yet). We've been doing a lot of hiking in the mountains in the surrounding states, which we really like. We didn't get to see a lot of mountains in TX! Hope other alumni are more interesting.

Wells, John: My new employment is as Senior Manager, KPMG Economic Consulting Services, 2001 M Street NW, Washington, DC 20036.

Yoo, Jang-Hee: I have a little short note to share with you. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Korean government appointed me as chairman of Foreign Policy Advisory Council. There are 50 members in the Council who are leading scholars and journalists in Korea, all specialized in international affairs.
