Election of 2004 Executive Committee Members and an Advisory Board Member

President Bong-Soo Lee appointed professors E. Han Kim (chair), Eun Kwan Choi and Bong Joon Yoon to serve as 2004 Nominating Committee members. The nominating committee selected following nominees for the executive committee for 2004:

  • President-elect:   Kyoo Hong Kim - Bowling Green State University(1988(SG),2000(VP))
  • Vice President:    Kang Hoon Park - Southeast Missouri State University
  • Secretary General:   Yoonbai Kim - University of Kentucky (2002(SG), 2003 (SG))
  • Treasurer:          Jee-Hyeong Park - Wayne State University

The current Advisory Board nominated the following member to replace Professor Bong Joon Yoon who has served the Advisory Board for a year.

  • Advisory Board Member:   Kwan Suk Kim - University of Notre Dame (1994(PE),1995(P))

All nominees are elected unanimously through email ballots. The Advisory Board also elected Professor John Riew to the second term of the Board Chair.


 
2004 Annual Meeting

The 2004 Annual Meeting was held on January 4 in San Diego. President Bong Soo Lee reported about the joint conferences that the KAEA participated and/or co-organized: Conferences with the KFA, KDI and KLI. 23 members of the KAEA participated in these conferences.

There were several special recognitions. Two young economists, Professors Yoosoon Chang and Jee-Hyeong Park, received special recognition for their excellent academic achievements with a plaque and cash prize. All past presidents received a plaque of appreciation for their services. And also, the director of the KAEA Research Institute, Hae-shn Hwang, received a plaque and a prize for his continous dedication to the KAEA.

Hae-shin Hwang reported the first major arrangements of research through the KAEA research Institute with the Bank of Korea, which is posted in the December issue of KAEA Research Institute reports. He also urged the members to participate in the research projects with other sponsoring institutes (KERI, KIF, KIPF).

After the business meeting, there was a panel discussion with distinguished panelists, Choongsoo Kim, Sangki Min, Woonyoul Choi and Sung-Hee Jwa.

The annual dinner is sponsored by Consul General of LA, Yunbok Lee. There was a miscommunication in arranging for the transportaion from the hotel to the restaurant, and the members had to squeeze into several taxicabs.

Call for Papers: KEA / KDI / KIF Conferences in 2004

The Eleventh International Economics Convention

The Eleventh International Convention sponsored jointly by the Korea-America Economic Association and Korea Economic Association will be held on August 12-13, 2004 at Yonsei University. The convention's primary topic is "The Global Competiveness of Korean Business Firms and Competitive Challenges in the Korean Economy," but papers on other topics, either empirical or theoretical, are also welcome.

Please submit your completed paper with an abstract of 200-400 words by e-mail with file attachment, including the JEL code to the central receiving (Vice president, Professor Kang Hoon Park, address shown below). Abstracts only will be considered, but the chance for acceptance is better with the completed papers. Student members of the KAEA may also submit a paper. The papers and abstracts will be grouped by the JEL code and read by the members of the Review Committee for blind review.

To be selected in the program, the KAEA annual membership fee has to be paid for year 2003 and 2004. The membership fee should be sent to the Treasurer of the KAEA, Professor Jee-Hyeong Park, Department of Economics, Wayne State University , Detroit, MI, 48202.

Submission Deadline: April 15, 2004. Notification of the selection of the papers for presentation will be made by May 15, 2004. For the accepted abstract, a completed paper should be submitted by May 31, 2004 to be included in the program.

Travel support: The KAEA plans to provide a partial support of travel expense of up to $500 (or more if additional funding can be secured) and lodging in Seoul.

KDI-KAEA Joint Conference

In conjunction with the 11th International Convention, KAEA invites manuscripts for a joint conference organized by the KDI and the KAEA. The conference seeks research papers on

  1. economic effects of population aging and policy agenda
  2. issues in education including private tutoring costs
  3. enhancing efficiency of government budget and fiscal policy
  4. real estate market issues
  5. job creation
  6. modernizing financial system and regulatory reforms in Korea
  7. the theory of firms and Korean Chaebol.

Submission: Submit your completed paper with an abstract of 200-400 words by e-mail with file attachment, including the JEL code to the central receiving (Vice President, Professor Kang Hoon Park). Only completed paper will be accepted. Submitted papers will be reviewed by two referees, Dr. Sang-Dal Shim (KDI reviewer) and a KAEA member, and 6 papers (or more, if many qualified papers are submitted) will be selected. All papers selected will be assumed as publication submission for the KDI Journal of Economic Policy. To be selected in the program, the KAEA annual membership fee has to be paid for year 2003 and 2004.

Submission deadline: April 15, 2004

Conference Date and Location: Date to be determined, probably one or two day after the 11th International Convention at the KDI. Selected papers may be presented at both the 11th International Convention and the KDI-KAEA Joint Conference.

Travel Support: Each paper selected for presentation will receive 1,500,000 won as a travel support. Additional 1,500,000 won will be given to each paper selected for publication in the KDI Journal. There will be no separate KAEA travel support for presentation at the 11th International Convention.

The Third KIF-KAEA Joint Seminar

In conjunction of the 11th International Convention, Korea Institute of Finance (KIF) has invited KAEA members to join the biannual seminar with the institute in August 2004. The theme of the seminar is “Population Aging in Korea and Future of the Korean Economy. The seminar seeks particularly research papers on 1) effects of population aging on saving, finance and pension (both case studies and quantitative analysis), 2) efficient resource allocation of banks and long-term capital market development in response to changes in population composition

Submission: Submit your completed paper with an abstract of 200-400 words by e-mail with file attachment, including the JEL code to the central receiving (Vice President, Professor Kang Hoon Park, address shown below). Only completed paper will be accepted. Submitted papers will be reviewed by the referees selected by the KIF and the KAEA, and 2-3 papers will be selected for the seminar. To be selected in the program, the KAEA annual membership fee has to be paid for year 2003 and 2004.

The Korea Monetary and Finance Association
(added on April 5)

Professor Unyul Choi, President of KMFA (Korea Monetary and Finance Association) invites a few KAEA members to present their papers at the KMFA May Conference to be held at Hansol's Oak Valley (in Kangwondo) on May 28 and 29, 2004. A bus will leave Seoul for Kangwondo in the morning on May 28 and return in the evening on May 29. Free room and board will be provided during the conference period and there will be some support for travel expenses from the KMFA (the amount is not yet specified).

If you have a completed paper in the areas of money and banking or financial economics, different from the paper to be presented at the KAEA-KEA Joint Conference in August, please submit it by e-mail with file attachment to Professor Kang Hoon Park, Vice President, KAEA at khpark@semo.edu by April 12. Indicate "KMFA Paper" in your e-mail and also on the cover of the paper.

When you submit your paper, please indicate where to present (KDI, KIF or KAEA-KEA). All papers submitted will be considered for the 11th International Convention. Those papers selected by the KDI and the KIF may be presented at the 11th International Convention.


 
2005 ASSA-KAEA meeting

The 2005 convention of the Applied Social Science Association will be held in Philadelphia, PA, January 7-9, 2005. The KAEA will sponsor three sessions at this annual convention including one joint session with American Economic Association. KAEA members are invited to submit papers for presentation. Both empirical and theoretical papers in a broad range of topics are welcome. The KAEA is particularly interested in papers that address issues relating to Korean economy and East Asian economy from various perspectives.

Guidelines for Paper Submission: Papers with abstract of 200-400 words should be submitted through e-mail. The cover page of the paper should include the JEL codes and the name, affiliation, e-mail and postal addresses, phone number of all authors. Only those who have paid KAEA membership fees for year 2003 and 2004 will be considered. Completed papers should be sent by April 15 to:

2004 SEA-KAEA Meeting

The annual meeting of the Southern Economic Association (SEA) will be held in New Orleans at the Fairmont Hotel, November 21 - 24, 2004 (Sunday to Tuesday). The SEA meeting is large in scope with about 200 organized sessions and is participated by many other associations. The Korea-America Economic Association (KAEA) will sponsor two or three sessions at this meeting, and KAEA members are invited to submit papers/proposals for presentation. We will hold a session particularly for Ph D candidates, so Ph D candidates nearing the completion of their thesis are encouraged to apply. A wide range of topics, both empirical and theoretical, are welcome which do not have to be related to Korea.
