MaeKyung Survey

Maeil Business Daily newspaper has provided financial supports for the KAEA every year for many years. They asked us to survey KAEA members' opinion about several issues. The survey contains only 16 multiple choice questions, and the result will be published by the newspaper in March, 2003. I strongly urge you to take just a few minutes to fill out the survey and send it by February 10 to the Treasurer: Professor Sei-Wan Kim, skim@Exchange.FULLERTON.EDU. Please click on Survey Form to get the questionnaire in MS Word file format.

Thank you for your support.

Bong Soo Lee
President

2003 Annual Meeting

Academic Sessions - The KAEA annual meeting was successfully held on January 3-5, 2002 in Washingtonm D.C. at the ASSA conventions. Twelve papers were presented in three academic sessions, including a joint session with American Economic Association on the "Issues in the Implementation of Structural Reforms in East Asia". We wish to extend warm appreciations to all participants, the members of the program committee, paper presenters, chairs, panel discussion participants, and discussants for the successful meetings.

Round Table Discussion - The 18th annual business meeting started with a round table discussion with invited speakers, Dr. Choong Young Ahn (President, KIEP)and Dr. Choong Soo Kim (President, KDI). They talked about the broad issues facing the Korean economy such as Regional Cooperation in East Asia and economic restructuring since the 1997 financial crisis.

Annual Business Meeting

- President Yang gave a short speach about the outstanding efforts of the executive committee members in organizing conferences and fund raising. Secretary General Yoonbai Kim presented a summary report on the conferences, in particular, the dificulty in the selection of papers to be presented at the annual meeting. Treasurer Soyoung Kim reported the income and expenditures in 2003, and a sizable amount of surplus forwarded to the next year.

- Youn-Suk Kim, the chair of Ad Hoc Committee, reported the Committee's recomendation on the amendment of the ByLaws. After a brief discussion, the amendment passed with 25 members voting in favor of and 4 members against the amendment.

- The new President Bong-Soo Lee introduced the new executive committee members and presented plaques to the former executive committee members in appreication of their contributions to the KAEA.

Dinner Reception

After the business meeting, all members were invited to the Han Sung Oak Restaurant for dinner reception. It was quite a memorable event. Because of the travel agency's error in the arrangement of bus tranportation, the members had to squeeze into several taxi cabs and arrived at the restaurant quite late. The second president of the KAEA, Dr. Jang Hee Yoo, delievered a short speech, and all members lined up for a late buffet dinner.

After the dinner, Dr. Semoon Chang opened the floor for karaoke singing. No one would have expected the stage manner and karaoke skills of our senior members. (Junior members, be warned! Work hard and play harder!)   Choong Young Ahn, Jang Hee Yoo, Jay Min Lee, and Sunwoong Kim and his wife showed their magnificient singing ability. We only wished that we had more time at the dinner for more songs and perhaps dances. The bus has finally arrived at 10 p.m., all members went back to their hotels.

Some members had to pay for the taxi from the hotel to the restaurant out of their own pockets. If you had not been reimbursed at the meeting, please send your request (include the receipt if you have one) to the treasurer

Invitation from JED

Dr. Bong Joon Yoon, Editor of the Journal of Economic Development, sent the following invitation for submission of papers from the members of the KAEA to the Journal.

"The Journal of Economic Development is a biannual journal (http://jed.econweb.cau.ac.kr) for a broad field, which covers various aspects of economic development of all the countries of the world. The JED welcomes theoretical as well as empirical studies of economic development. The JED articles are indexed in EconLit.

As an editor of the JED, I am looking for quality manuscripts, which deal with interesting and fundamental issues of economic development. Such manuscripts are not always appreciated by the best-known journals. I assure you that the JED will provide due respect for your work. I promise you prompt editorial service, minimizing the processing time between manuscript submission and editorial decision.

I hope that you will use the JED as an appropriate outlet for your research."

The address of Dr. Yoon is on the directory.
