Seoul Convention
The Ninth International Economics Convention
August 18-19, 2000

Preparation for Seoul Conference is under way. The conference will be held at Seoul National University. During the two-day period (August 19th and 20th, 2000), 64 papers will be presented in 24 sessions. KAEA members contribute about one half of the papers presented. The final program for the conference can be seen in a pdf format or at the KEA web site .


 
KAEA - KIF Joint Conference

The KAEA Executive Committee thanks Professor Soo-Bin Park for having organized a joint seminar with the KIF ( Korea Institute of Finance) to be held at the Institute on August 16, 2000. The theme of the seminar is "New Monetary Order : Capital Liberalization and  E-Commerce". You may view the PROGRAM in the pdf format.


 
Cooperative Agreement between KAEA and KDI School

A small signing ceremony of the exchange agreement between the KAEA and the KDI School of Public Policy and Management will be held at 9:00 am on Thursday, August 17, 2000. Nominating Committee for 2001 KAEA Officers
Professor Soo-Bin Park graciously accepted the duty of chairing the nominating committee for the next year's KAEA executive officers. He reports that Professors Semoon Chang and Hae-shin Hwang have kindly agreed to serve on the nominating committee.

The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) is a government-funded research organization whose main objective is to provide visions and policy recommendations on information and communications-related issues to the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) as well as other Ministries. Polices generated by KISDI, in such areas as national strategy towards a digital economy, the information technology (IT) industry, telecommunications market competition and regulatory measures, radio frequency and broadcasting, postal services support the Korean government's efforts to build an information society in the 21st century.

We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. in economics (or related fields) with an emphasis in applications of microeconomic theory, industrial organization and econometrics. Potential candidates must be a Korean citizen.

Applicants must send (1) curriculum vita with passport-size photo attached (2) one research paper to present, (3) transcript from the last school attended and (4) 3 letters of recommendation including the dissertation advisor by December 15, 2000.

Contract Professors and Post-Doctoral Fellows
Department of Economics, Korea University

The BK21 Program in the Department of Economics, Korea University, has openings for 2~3 contract professors and 2~3 post doctoral fellows. Applications are welcomed from young professionals with outstanding records in academic research. The selection will be made based on research potential. The BK (Brain Korea) 21 Education and Research Program is financially supported by the Korean Ministry of Education.

  • Areas: International trade and finance, Macroeconomics, Information and telecommunication, Environment and labor, and Institutional economics and Korean economy.
  • Application period:  by September 30, 2000
  • Required documents: (1) curriculum vitae (photo attached), (2) list of publications, (3) research proposal (A4, 2 sheets), including the proposed period of employment, (4) a copy of graduation certificate and academic transcript (PhD), and (5) one reference.
  • Qualification: Contract professors should have research experience of more than two years. The appointees must be able to conduct research as well as teaching in English. Post-doctoral fellows include those who can obtain Ph.Ds during the fall semester, 2000.
  • Salaries will be around 28 million Won per year for a contract professor and around 18 million Won per year for a postdoctoral fellow, depending upon research experience. The initial contract will run for a minimum of six months up to one year, and thereafter an extension up to one year may be considered.

Congratulations! Suk-Hi Kim, Professor of International Finance at the University of Detroit, received a 20-year service award from the National Association for Korean Schools at its annual conference, which was held in San Francisco from August 3 to August 7, 2000. Since 1980, Dr. Kim has taught Korean history and culture to Korean-American high school students at the Korean Cultural Institute in Detroit, Michigan. Congratulations Dr. Kim.
