KAEA REGIONAL MEETINGS
In addition to the annual ASSA/KAEA meetings, we have been organizing an academic session at the SEA meeting. To increase the visibility of the KAEA in the profession, The KAEA will sponsor an academic session at other regional meetings.

KAEA will subsidize any direct cost of organizing a session and one group dinner for the participants up to a reasonable amount, upon the approval of the program by the Executive Committee. If anyone is interested in organizing sessions in other regional economics conferences, please contact the President of KAEA, Dr. Bong-Joon Yoon.

The International Atlantic Economic Society will hold their annual meeting in October 15-18, 2000, in Charleston, South Carolina, and they are soliciting additional sessions. If you are interested in organizing a session please contact Dr. Bong-Joon Yoon immediately.

Below is the letter from John M. Virgo, Executive Vice President of the IAES to KAEA's inquiry about organizing sessions for the KAEA.

The International Atlantic Economic Society would welcome the possibility of forging an institutional link with the Korea-America Economic Association. As you are probably aware, the IAES holds two conferences a year. In March we are in Europe and in October we are in North America (east coast of U.S. or Canada). Future conference locations include:

  • March 14-21, 2000 Munich
  • October 15-18,2000 Charleston
  • March 13-20, 2001 Athens
  • October 11-14, 2001 Philadelphia
  • March 12-19, 2002 Paris
  • October 2002 TBA
  • March 11-18, 2003 Vienna

We also publish the Atlantic Economic Journal and International Advances in Economic Research, both in hard copy and electronically. The policy of the Executive Committee is that a group can organize sessions at our meetings under its own name. Each session would clearly indicate in the printed program that the session was organized by that group. All sessions must meet our normal guidelines and are subject to approval by the IAES. Paper submission fees would be waived and members of the organization's sessions would be allowed to register for the conference at the IAES member rate instead of the nonmember rate. All registration fees would belong to the IAES. If your organization wished to receive anything above that, then you would need to add your portion on top of our standard fees. All fees would be paid directly to the IAES by the individual participants. Finally, any meeting room rental charges for the additional room(s) for your sessions, along with A/V fees, must be prepaid by your organization at least 60 days prior to the meetings. If you decide to organize some sessions for Charleston in October, I need to know shortly. Meeting room space is in short supply and extra space needs to be rented as soon as possible.

Best regards,

John M. Virgo, Ph.D.

JOB OPENINGS

Sungkyunkwan University

The Department of Economics of Sungkyunkwan University has secured a sizable amount of financial resources through the project named Brain Korea 21 (a.k.a. BK-21) administered by the Ministry of Education of Korea. By giving a head-start to a few promising graduate programs in the country, it aims to develop top-notch graduate schools with superb research capability to train highly qualified human resources. The program commences this year and is expected to last for seven consecutive years.

The main theme of our program is "Economics which leads economic development in the new millennium: Theory, History and Policy." This program consists of four teams: 1) Economics of Competition and Cooperation, 2) Toward an Advanced Market Economic System, 3) Public Economy and Public Policy in the New Millennium: Efficiency, Equity and Quality of Life, and 4) Outward Economic Strategies in the Era of Globalization.

An important aspect of the BK-21 project is that active interaction with leading universities and research institutes abroad is stipulated. Participating groups will run joint education/research programs with world-class universities and institutes to enhance their competitiveness. Under the program, faculties and students of the selected universities will form collaborative research teams with their counterpart universities. Credit exchange programs may be arranged as well.

To achieve the stated goal, we are currently developing following couple of programs:

  1. Recruiting Contract Professors and Post-Doc.
We are recruiting 2 contract professors and 6 post-doc. Compensations are 15 million Won per year for post-doc and 24 million Won per year for contract professors. Depending on career, compensation is negotiable. And the Department would provide an office and housing for the duration of the visit. The positions begin March. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Send resume with a list and copies of recent publications and one letter of recommendation.

  2. Sister relationship
We are looking for counterparts who have program matching up to our program and show interest in our research agenda. We would like to propose sister relationship including research collaboration and faculty and student exchange program. We would like to provide some grants for setting up this program.

I believe it is desirable and of benefit to all to build a strong partnership in research and education. It will be an important opportunity to expand the breadth of our research programs through visits, collaboration and the exchange of graduate students. I urge you to give serious consideration on this matter. Your positive response and constructive inputs will be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

For more information, contact Prof. Jun Young Kim, BK-21 Program Director, Department of Economics, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea at e-mail: jykim@skku.ac.kr, Fax: +82(2)744-5717, Tel: +82(2)760-0430. Also check out our website; http://ecostat.skku.ac.kr

Soongsil University

The College of Business & Economics of Soongsil University has been awarded the honor of BK21 nomination from the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Education will financially support the establishment of world-standard graduate (Ph.D.) program at Soongsil University for the forthcoming years, two years at least and 7 years at maximum. The title of our program is "Education and Research Program Dedicated to the Fostering of Entrepreneurial Small Business," nicknamed EnSB.

The EnSB program consists of three education and research teams: entrepreneurship-studying team, market-institutional-infra-studying team, and business-innovation-studying team. I belong to the second team, market-institutional-infra-studying team. This team adopts rather the approach of institutional economics or law & econ approach.

For the successful promotion of the program, research activities should be vitalized and curricula operation should achieve world standard. For this purpose, our plan can be summarized as follows.

  1. We are looking for counterparts who have similar research interests, with whom ways of collaboration may be sought for.
  2. One or two visiting position at Sooongsil University is available from Spring semester (from March). The obligation is teaching two courses per semester and research collaboration with Soongsil professors. Monthly payment of 2 million won is the pecuniary compensation.
  3. If any program at U.S. universities does match up to Soongsil's EnSB program, we are quite willing to propose sister university relationship, which may include research collaboration and faculty and student exchange program.

For more information, contact Prof. Sung-Sup Rhee, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at rheess@saint.soongsil.ac.kr , or check out the web site http://www.soongsil.ac.kr/!www/guesi/gongji/index.html
