 Prof. Semoon Chang (Univ. of South Alabama) has served as the president of the Association for University Business and Economic Research, 1998-99, and as a member of the board of directors of Homeless Coalition of Mobile since 1996.

 Dr. Gill-Chin Lim, took the position of the Dean and the Distinguished Institute Professor at the KDI School of International Policy and Management beginning July 1998. The newly established KDI School is an independent graduate school under the auspices of Korea Development Institute to educate future leaders in public and private sectors. Currently the school has 111 students from 11 countries in the following four fields: International Economic Policy, International Relations, Strategy and International Management, and Growth and Development. Dr. Lim says that

"You may recommend good applicants to our Master's program. The School welcomes visits of the KAEA members. We will offer guest studio whenever there is a vacancy. We also welcome sabbatical teaching or research at our school."

 Prof. Young Back Choi (St. John's Univ.) was a Visiting Scholar, Max-Planck-Institut, Germany, June 1998 and a Visiting Scholar, Social Philosophy and Policy Center, Bowling Green State University, Fall 1998.

 Prof. Sun Myung Kahng (Univ. of Minnesota - Morris) has been an active member from the beginning of the KAEA. He unexpectedly passed away on April 5, 1999. We collected eulogies (see above) for Dr. Kahng from fellow members. The KAEA sent a flower arrangement to Mrs. Kahng. You may send your condolence directly to his wife and son at

 Prof. Youn-Suk Kim (Kean Univ.) will be a visiting professor at the Graduate School of International and Area Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Spring 1999.

 Prof. Bun-Song Lee (City Univ of Seoul), formerly of Univ of Nebraska-Omaha, recently finished a paper, "Determinants of Commuting Time and Distance for Seoul Residents", based on 1990 and 1995 Korean Census data. He is also studying, among other things, the determinants of inferior housing among Seoul residents. Jang-Hee Yoo, who is the dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at the Ewha Womans University, has just published a book titled "Real Success, Financial Fall: A Reassessment of the Korean Dynamism." Professor Yoo was the KAEA's president in 1986, and made significant contributions in the early years of the Association. Professor Yoo offers in the book various new policy measures that Korea needs to consider in order to strengthen its position in the growing global village. J. Jay Choi calls for papers on Asian financial crisis. He serves as the Series Editor for the International Finance Review. The first volume, "Global Risk, Emerging Markets, and International Investment," will be published by JAI Press/Elsevier, and contains high quality original articles concerning thecauses, consequences and lessons of the recent Asian financial crisis.

Theoretical, empirical or institutional papers on issues pertaining to both domestic and international dimensions of the crisis are welcome, as are the papers that critically evaluate the Asian financial crisis in line of similar experiences in other regions.

Completed papers, in triplicate, should be submitted to (sorry, no on-line submissions will be accepted) to J. Jay Choi at the address in the directory.

Separate volumes are planned on global financial markets: risk, crisis and contagion (Vol. 2) and Korean industries and financial markets (Vol. 3). The Series will publish theme-oriented annual volumes on global risk management, emerging markets, international finance and investment, international capital markets, and other related issues. Country or region-specific volumes may also be considered. Those interested in editing a volume are invited to contact Dr.Choi.

C. S. Pyun (University of Memphis) has been selected as the 1999 recipient of the University Teaching Excellence Fellowship Award, that carrys extra stipend of $10,000 a year for three years. I am expected to redesign and improve the instruction of the introductory finance course with Internet interactive resources and technology.

Kyung Hwan Baik (Sung Kyun Kwan University) was promoted to the rank of full professor on October 1, 1999.

Kwan S. Kim (University of Notre Dame), received a "Distinguished Fellow " award during the plenary session of the Fifth World Congress of the International Society for Intercommunication of New Ideas in Mexico City, August 20, 1999. The award has been given bi-annually in recognition of the contribution to the advancement of new ideas in the economic science and humanities. He was also an invited panel member during the US-Libya Conference on Economic and Business Relations held in Maastricht, Netherlands, April 9, 1999.

Bong-Soo Lee, (Univ of Houston) has been promoted to the rank of full professor.
