Summer Economics Fellows Program

The American Economic Association and the National Science Foundation are once again sponsoring a fellowship program Designed to increase the participation and advancement of Women and underrepresented minorities in economics. This fellowship allows the fellow to spend a summer in residence at a sponsoring research institution such as a Federal Reserve Bank or other public agency.

DESCRIPTION:

During their residency, fellows participate as members of the research community while engaged in a research project of their own choosing. Fellows will be mentored by experienced economists both on scientific issues and career issues such as negotiating publications, the job market, and advancement strategies. Fellows are typically either junior faculty or graduate students at the dissertation stage.

The Student Seminar "Free Market Environmentalism" is co-sponsored by Liberty Fund, Inc., and will be held June 23-28, 2008, at the Wingate Inn in Bozeman, Montana.  As you know, the seminar is designed to introduce students to a property rights and market approach to environmental issues. The seminar is a combination of lectures and Socratic style discussions of assigned readings that address specific themes. In addition to the stimulating academic discussions, students have one free day to enjoy some of the amenities of Bozeman. Successful applicants will receive a scholarship for tuition, meals, lodging, and a travel stipend of $500. While it is helpful if the students are familiar with basic economic principles, we encourage non-economics majors to apply also. Students can apply online at PERCstudentseminar.org.  The deadline for submitting applications is March 26, 2008, but we encourage students to apply as soon as possible.  

PERC's Graduate Fellowship Program brings students to Bozeman for three months during which each fellow writes a paper of publishable quality. Fellows are paid a monthly stipend of $1,600 as well as reasonable roundtrip transportation costs. Each student is assigned a mentor and is required to present two seminars during their stay. Typically, successful applicants are graduate and law students with an interest in natural resources, property rights, and environmental issues. Our past graduate fellows have come from a wide range of disciplines, including economics, law, history, international development, political science, philosophy, and  natural resources. We require that a student show potential for research and writing on a natural resource or environmental topic and preferably already be working on a research paper, thesis, or dissertation.
